The City of Detroit Department of Public Works (DPW) contracts two private haulers by area: Priority Waste serves neighborhoods east of Woodward Avenue and Southwest Detroit, and Waste Management (WM, formerly Advanced Disposal) serves the west and northwest sides. Trash, recycling, bulk and seasonal yard waste are all collected weekly on the same day (weekly since June 3, 2024). Carts go out by 7 a.m. and must be back in by 9 p.m. on collection day. After a listed weekday holiday, collection slides one day for the rest of the week, so Friday routes move to Saturday.

Detroit trash pickup holiday schedule

Upcoming holidays in Detroit and what each does to pickup. The 2026 holiday schedule is posted; 2027’s isn’t out yet.

The city's 2026 curbside leaflet says: 'Collection is pushed back one day following New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas', with the example that a Monday holiday moves Friday service to Saturday. The 2025 leaflet also listed Labor Day; the 2026 leaflet doesn't. WM's holiday rule (the same every year): a weekday holiday delays collection one day for the rest of the week, and weekend holidays cause no delay. Priority's page lists New Year's, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas with the same one-day delay. The city hasn't posted a 2027 leaflet yet; New Year's Day 2027 is a Friday, so check with your hauler before it.
