Portland doesn't collect trash itself. The City of Portland (Bureau of Planning and Sustainability) franchises 9 private haulers, each assigned to areas of the city, and homes can't choose. Garbage is picked up every other week (Orange or Purple calendar) and recycling and compost every week, all on the same weekday. The only holidays that change service are Christmas and New Year's Day: when one falls on a weekday, all later collections that week slide one day (Friday goes to Saturday).

The franchise covers only single-family homes, duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes. Apartment buildings with 5 or more units and businesses choose any City-permitted commercial hauler, and the City doesn't set their rates.

How trash day works in Portland

By address. The City assigns each home a hauler, a weekday (Monday to Friday) and an Orange or Purple garbage week. Look it up with Find My Hauler or the Garbage Day Reminder tool or app, which also offers printable calendars and reminders. A 12-month schedule is mailed in the Portland Curbsider each June.

Recycling: every week. Recycling (blue cart) and compost (green cart) are weekly. Garbage is every other week, and there's a monthly garbage option (every four weeks). Glass goes in a separate yellow bin; the City's current pages don't say how often it's picked up, so check with your hauler. The City's garbage collection schedule map also shows a 'Pilot' calendar with weekly garbage in some areas.

Carts out: By 6 a.m. Drivers come between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. Remove bins within 24 hours of pickup. Source

Garbage, recycling and compost are collected on the same weekday. Garbage comes only on your Orange or Purple week, so time bin cleanings to that week. Some westside homes pay 'Westside Terrain' rates. The City hasn't listed any hauler changes for 2025-2026; the July 1, 2026 update changed only rates and recycling rules. City Garbage & Recycling helpline: 503-823-7202 or wasteinfo@portlandoregon.gov, or call 311 (503-823-4000).
