Baltimore City's Department of Public Works (Bureau of Solid Waste) collects residential trash and recycling itself, citywide, once a week each, using city-issued wheeled carts. Collection runs Tuesday through Friday; Monday isn't a regular curbside collection day, so Monday holidays don't affect pickup. When a holiday has landed on a Tuesday-to-Friday collection day, DPW has skipped that day and made it up on the Saturday of the same week, announcing each one in a press release a few days ahead. Weekly curbside trash and weekly recycling. Yard waste goes out on your regular trash day in paper bags or bundles (up to 5 a week). Seasonal leaf collection runs from the first Monday in October to the last Monday in January, with bulk leaf pickup on Mondays by 311 appointment. Bulk trash is picked up on a set Saturday each month by 311 appointment (up to 3 items, out by 7 a.m.). Carts are city property and assigned to the address. Some homes have rear or alley collection, so the 'exact location where trash is collected' may be the alley. In summer, trash and recycling start at 5 a.m. (the 2026 season ran through Sept 30, 2026); the normal start is 6 a.m.

Every address is eligible, but service is capped at 96 gallons of mixed trash a week; addresses that need more (such as larger apartment buildings and businesses) must hire a private hauler. Each residential building gets one trash can and one recycling can, no matter how many units it has. Baltimore County has its own separate system.

How trash day works in Baltimore

Each address has a fixed weekly collection day, Tuesday to Friday, for trash and recycling. Look it up in the City's 311 address lookup or call 311.

Recycling: every week. DPW: 'Baltimore City offers weekly curbside collection for both trash and recycling.' Recycling goes in the blue city can (single-family homes) or in lidded, labeled containers, with no plastic bags. DPW has temporarily suspended recycling in extreme heat, for example from July 1, 2026.

Carts out: Out by 6 a.m. on collection day, or by 5 a.m. during the summer early-start season (it ran through Sept 30 in 2025 and 2026). DPW recommends setting out the evening before, from 6 p.m. There's no published time for bringing cans back in. Source

DPW's notices for MLK Day, Presidents Day and Indigenous Peoples Day say Monday isn't a regularly scheduled curbside collection day. Collection days are available only through the address lookup, not as a published map or list.

Baltimore trash pickup holiday schedule

Upcoming holidays in Baltimore and what each does to pickup. Baltimore hasn’t announced yet how these holidays change pickup.

Baltimore DPW doesn't post a yearly holiday calendar or a rule that holds every year; it issues a press release a few days before each City holiday. 2026 notices so far cover MLK Day through Indigenous Peoples Day (Oct 12, 2026). Notices for Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas 2026 aren't out yet, DPW hasn't said whether Election Day (Nov 3) will be a holiday, and nothing for 2027 has been posted, including New Year's Day (Friday, Jan 1, 2027). In 2025 and 2026, every DPW notice for a holiday on a collection day (Tuesday to Friday) canceled that day's trash and recycling pickup and named the Saturday of the same week as the make-up day, without moving other days: Veterans Day (Tuesday, Nov 11, 2025) to Saturday, Nov 15; Thanksgiving (Thursday, Nov 27, 2025) to Saturday, Nov 29; Christmas (Thursday, Dec 25, 2025) to Saturday, Dec 27; Good Friday (Apr 3, 2026) to Saturday, Apr 4; and Juneteenth (Friday, June 19, 2026) to Saturday, June 20.
