The City of Dallas Department of Sanitation Services is the only provider of garbage and recycling collection for single-family homes and duplexes citywide. Private haulers may not serve these homes. Garbage and recycling are both collected once a week, on the same day, Monday through Friday, at the curb or in an approved alley. Look up your day by address on the City's Schedule page or in the Dallas Sanitation app. On Thanksgiving and Christmas 2026, the holiday's routes and the rest of that week move one day later, so Friday routes run on Saturday. The City hasn't posted its 2027 holidays yet, starting with New Year's Day.

Garbage (gray cart) and recycling (blue cart) are each collected once a week. Brush and bulky items (bagged leaves and grass, limbs, furniture) are picked up at the curb once a month, up to 10 cubic yards; set them out Thursday through Sunday before your collection week. In the 2025-26 holiday weeks, brush and bulky pickup kept its normal schedule. The City's calendar shows no brush and bulky collection Nov 30 to Dec 4, 2026, a fifth-Monday week, but garbage and recycling still run that week. Starting Feb 1, 2027, about 6,000 homes in roughly 200 alley blocks (about 2% of customers) move from alley to curbside collection, keeping their collection day, and tiered rates start: $37.76 for curb and $45.22 for alley, replacing $40.09. Two transfer stations (drop-off sites) are temporarily closed, Southwest (Westmoreland) Oct 14 to Nov 8, 2026 and Northeast (Fair Oaks) Oct 28 to Nov 15, 2026; curbside pickup isn't affected. The City's authorized private hauler list (Jan 22, 2025) covers commercial and multi-family properties only and includes Republic Services, Waste Management of Texas, Community Waste Disposal, Advantage Waste Disposal and others.

Not covered

Commercial, industrial and multi-family properties (apartments) can use City service or a City-franchised private hauler. Brush and bulky collection isn't available for business or commercial properties.

How trash day works in Dallas

Recycling: every week. The City says 'Residential recycling is collected once per week,' and its calendar shows recycling on the same day as garbage.

Carts out: Carts must be at the curb or in an approved alley by 7 a.m. on collection day, and not earlier than 6 p.m. the evening before. Bring carts in by 8 a.m. the day after collection. Report a missed cart if it hasn't been serviced by 8 p.m. on collection day. Source

Collection runs Monday through Friday; Saturday is used only for holiday make-up. The City's holiday page says to 'place your roll carts at the normal pickup location by 7 a.m. on your adjusted collection day.'

The City's holiday schedule page still lists only the 2025-26 season: Thanksgiving (Nov 27, 2025), Christmas (Dec 25, 2025) and New Year's Day (Jan 1, 2026). Each had no collection that day, and that day's routes and the next day's routes moved one day later.
