The NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) collects trash, recycling and curbside compost from residential buildings in all five boroughs. There is no private residential hauler. Your collection days depend on your address; look them up in DSNY's Find My Collection Schedule tool. Material in a lidded bin can go out after 6 PM the night before and bags after 8 PM, and bins must come back in by 9 PM on collection day. On recent holidays with no collection, DSNY told residents to set material out that evening, with pickup starting the next day and possible delays.

Curbside compost is collected weekly on your recycling day. Since June 1, 2026, buildings with 1 to 9 units must put trash out in official NYC Bins, buildings with 31 or more units must use Empire Bins (on-street containers), and buildings with 10 to 30 units may choose either. Recyclables don't need to be in bins (clear bags are allowed), and bulk items go out with trash under DSNY rules.

Not covered

Businesses hire private carters licensed by the Business Integrity Commission / Commercial Waste Zones program, not DSNY. DSNY covers residential buildings of all sizes.
